Training for Reactive Dogs
- During this course, we delve deep into various situations a reactive dog might encounter during a walk, such as a trigger at a good distance, a trigger too close, an unplanned or surprising dog encounter, mild outbursts, and strong outbursts. Based on this, we have then selected a range of different exercises that can be done for each imaginable "color"/mood the dog might be in. Throughout the course, we thus build on this picture with exercises that can be used in different situations.
- We also go through what we need to consider when things have gone too far and what we don't want to happen occurs – an outburst. We go through when it's time to distract and end, de-stress and relax, and most importantly, the recovery before we embark on new dog encounter training.
- All dogs are individuals with different experiences, needs, preferences, and knowledge. Therefore, we have several exercises for each "color"/mood so you can experiment and see what your own dog prefers. The important thing is that there is something for every dog to practice in all situations.
-
Private training
-
In some cases, a course environment is too difficult for the dog to start in.
-
For these dogs, we offer the same concept in the form of private training.
-
There, we go through the basics and work on creating a good starting point for the dog and owner so that they can manage dog encounters in the long run.
-
-
Evidence-Based Methods
-
The theory behind this course is derived from various research and evidence-based methods that are beneficial for the dog and the relationship between dog and owner.
-
We who have put together the course have delved deep into the subject, researched, tested various methods over time, and worked with reactive dogs both professionally and privately based on this to determine the best combination.
-
However, we have concluded that this concept is a living concept that will continue to evolve, be built upon, and grow as new research emerges.
-
-
Quick Fixes!?
-
Changing the feeling, counter-conditioning and working to break a habit and pattern that the dog has had for a longer period will take time.
-
We do not offer quick fixes. Our concept provides the tools needed to strengthen the relationship, teach the dog to relax, and trust that the owner will protect and handle situations so that the dog does not have to take matters into its own hands.
-
And just like any other habit you break, it takes time; you might relapse, but you just have to get back up and continue.
Below you will find frequently asked questions and answers
FAQ
My dog can't cope with meeting other dogs, how will it manage to be in a class with other dogs?
We tailor the course and environment for reactive dogs. Each dog gets a small covered "booth" made of compost fencing. There, they don't have to see other dogs unless the training requires it. In that case, it takes place under controlled conditions, at the right distance with support and coaching from the instructors.
How do I know if this course is suitable for my dog and me?
Before each course starts, you will be asked to complete a comprehensive questionnaire so that we can better assess if this is the right course for you and how we can adapt it for all participants to make it as good as possible. If, contrary to expectations, we feel after the start that the course level is too difficult for you, you can continue with private training so that you can build the foundation you need to eventually complete the course.
Is there a follow-up course?
